If there is one thing that really annoys me it's lack of respect. Certain
people have none. You see them in the street doing things that people
wouldn't do in the privacy of their own homes. What's more a certain group
of people have begun to do the same thing in the commercial world too.
Sending death threats to the producer of Doctor Who for instance just isn't
on. But fans do it. Why, I will never know. For a start it isn't going to
get them respect, or even a response. It may also cause worry or give the
potential for harm to someone who has no say in the matter.
Yes fans appear to be thoughtless and this is the view that is carried
forward to the media. And yet it is not the view that should be carried
forward, since it isn't true of all fans. Just a very small and
inconsiderate number.
The same thing is true throughout all of fandom. I've no doubt that there ay
be campaigners wanting the return of modules for D&D would write with such
threats to TSR. If not by mail, by email which is just as bad. People
producing modules are doing a service for role players, true they are
getting paid fairly well but it is a service none the less. They too deserve
a level of respect.
Until all fans start behaving with civility and loyalty it will be difficult
for them to be taken seriously. The small number who spoil things for the
rest, due to their own selfishness.
Let's do something about it. Shall we?
